Blue Ash Idol

FAQ's

Q: What do I need for the audition and the performances? A: Each performer will need a tape or CD or legally downloaded song on an MP3 player of their music. A tape/CD player will be provided. The music must be Karaoke style with NO LEAD VOCALS. For the first audition a performer may sing without music, but all following elimination rounds MUST have music.

Q: Where can I find Karaoke music? A: Most stores that sell CD’s will have a Karaoke section. If you are looking for something specific, go to a music store (such as: Carter's Music Co) or you may be able to find it on a web site. A legally downloaded song is also acceptable.

Q: What are the judging criteria? A: 1 – VOCALS – pitch, range, consistency
2 – PRESENTATION – interpretation of the music and lyrics
3 – PERSONALITY -- presentation of self outside of performance
4 – AUDIENCE INVOLVEMENT
5 – STAGE PRESENCE – natural ability and comfort on stage; judges will not make verbal comments, but will score on paper.
Q: Can a different piece of music be used for each round? A: Yes. Each round will require a different style of music to be determined after registrations are closed. You will be informed of these requirements in plenty of time to prepare for the next round.
Q: What is the cost of participation? A: There is no cost to register and audition, however there is an entry fee of $25.00 if you make it through auditions to the first round.
Q: What sort of song should I choose? A: Pick a song that you know and that is in your vocal range. Remember, there will be a family audience, so all words, dress, and actions must be appropriate. The Blue Ash Idol officials have the right to review the lyrics and reject a song if it is inappropriate for any reason. ALL DECISIONS ARE FINAL.
Q: How long will my audition be? A: You will be limited to approximately 1 minute, since we need to process many contestants quickly. Performers should have their music cued to a point in the music where they begin singing. If your music is not at the right place, you will be penalized that time. (If it takes 45 seconds to find the right spot in the music, you will then have only 15 seconds of singing time.)

Q: Can a parent/guardian go into the audition room with me? A: NO, this is the singer’s audition and they need the experience of singing on their own, as this is the way they will be performing.

Q. How long will my performance be? A. You will be limited to approximately 3 minutes. Performers should have their music cued to where they will begin singing.

Q: What should a performer wear? A: This falls under the same requirements as the song material. Dress appropriately for a family show – do not be rejected because of your attire.
Q: My child is only 8 years old, but has a beautiful voice and will not be 9 before the January 1, 2010 cut-off date. I want him/her to compete in the 9-13 Division. Is that possible? A: No, there will be NO exceptions to the age requirements.
Q: Where will the audition and performances take place? A: Auditions will be held at the Blue Ash Presbyterian Church and both 1st and 2nd Performances are at Sycamore High School.

Q:  How will the voting work? A: Audience members will have the option of voting for their 3 favorite performers in each performance round. Judges will also be critiquing your performance.

Q: Can I vote for my favorite more than once? A: No, only one vote per performer from your ballot will be counted for each round.
